Hey there, Ops Connectors... how's everybody connecting the dots this week?

Welcome to The Ops Connector™ — where better systems create better businesses

Here's a confession it took me most of a career and a few layoffs to say out loud:

I've been doing operations my entire career. I just never had the title.

Thirty years of it. Government contracts, software and ad sales, a hair salon I owned, a couple of other businesses I built from scratch. Different industries, different titles, same actual job underneath all of them. I'll spare you the full résumé... the point isn't the list.

This is where everything changed

The point is what stopped me cold when I finally sat down and looked back: every single one of those things was operations. Building the systems. Fixing the broken process. Being the person everyone came to when something was on fire and nobody knew what to do.

I was operating the whole time. I just didn't know that's what the world called it.

So here's where I'm standing today: 51 years old, 30 years behind me, and only now putting my name on it. If some part of you is worried you've missed your window, that you're too far into one career to build another, read that again. You haven't missed anything. I'm proof the window doesn't close. It just waits for you to notice it's open.

So why now?

Real talk, because I promised myself this newsletter would always give it to you straight: I got laid off. Not for the first time either. And to be clear, never for performance... that's just the nature of the industries I've built my career in.

I could tell you that was fun. It wasn't. But here's the lens I want you to borrow whenever life hands you a plot twist: it happened for a reason.

For years I put in the fourteen and sixteen hour days for other people's companies. I built the machine, kept it running, and somewhere in there I stopped having time to build anything of my own. The layoff didn't close a door. It handed me the keys to one I'd been walking past for years.

So this is me, walking through it. On purpose. And I'd love for you to come with me.

What is The Ops Connector, exactly?

Operations is about connecting the dots. That's the whole philosophy in one line.

Operations connects four essential elements: People, Process, Technology, and Communication. When one breaks, the whole system feels it.

Here's how I picture it. Every business has four moving parts:

  • PEOPLE

  • PROCESS

  • TECHNOLOGY

  • COMMUNICATION

Operations is the thing that connects them. That's the job. That's the whole job. And this newsletter is where I connect those dots out loud, with you... exploring AI, automation, systems, leadership, and the real-world lessons that actually make businesses run better.

Whether you're brand new and trying to break into ops, a seasoned pro, or a COO who's seen it all and still wants a fresh angle, there's a seat for you here. And if you've never once thought of yourself as an "operations person," I've got news that might change your whole week: if you've ever run a household, juggled a calendar full of people who don't talk to each other, and kept the whole thing from falling apart, congratulations. You've been doing operations all along. You just didn't have the title either. (See? You're already one of us.) 😉

You've been doing operations all along.”

Here's what I promise you

Every single issue, you'll walk away with three to four things you can actually use. Real, usable stuff, wrapped in a story so it sticks.

Because I'll tell you what turns me off in a newsletter: when the whole thing is me, me, me, and the reader gets nothing to take with them. That's not what we do here. This is a two-way street. I share what I've learned, you tell me what you're wrestling with, and we figure it out together.

I'm not going to pretend I know everything. Thirty years in, I'm still learning, and I'll happily learn right alongside you. But I do know a thing or two about turning chaos into a process, and I'm finally ready to hand it to you.

Where this is going

I won't bury the vision, because I'm too excited to keep it quiet. This starts as a newsletter, but it's growing into something bigger:

  • Break Into Ops, a course for anyone looking to transition into operations from wherever they are right now.

  • The Ops Connector group, a membership community where we go deeper and I roll up my sleeves and help you.

  • And a whole lot more I'll let you discover as we go.

I'm building all of it from scratch, in real time, the same way I'd build operations for any company. Which means you get a front-row seat to the systems, the automations, and the "well, that didn't work, let's try this" moments. I'm my own case study now. Lucky you. 😊

So that's me. Regina. The dot connector. Your person for all things operations.

A little welcome gift

I couldn't let you walk in the door empty-handed. That's not how I was raised. 😊

One of my favorite ways to prove you've been doing operations all along is to take something you already do from memory and turn it into a real, written process. So here's a free AI prompt that does exactly that. Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, or whatever you use, fill in the blank, and watch it turn the mess in your head into a clean SOP.

The 5-Minute SOP Prompt

You are an operations expert helping me turn a task I do from memory into a clear, repeatable SOP.

Here is the task, described messily and out of order: [DESCRIBE THE TASK IN YOUR OWN WORDS. DON'T WORRY ABOUT STRUCTURE.]

Please turn it into a simple SOP with four parts: (1) what this process is and why it matters, in one or two sentences, (2) who should own it, (3) the step-by-step instructions in plain language a brand-new person could follow, and (4) one simple way to know the process worked. Keep it clear and free of jargon. Ask me up to three questions if anything is unclear before you write it.

Your takeaways this week

  1. You've probably been doing operations longer than you think. Look at your own story and give it the title it deserves.

  2. A setback isn't the end of the road. Sometimes it's the on-ramp. Ask yourself what door just opened.

  3. Operations isn't complicated. It's connecting four moving parts: people, process, technology, and communication.

  4. Reply and tell me one thing you'd love to see covered. I read every single one.

The Ops Challenge

This week, write down one task you do entirely from memory. Then use the 5-Minute SOP Prompt above to turn it into a real, written process. That's it. One task, one SOP. You'll be surprised how much of an operator you already are... and if you make something useful with it, reply and show me. I mean that.

We're going to build better businesses. We're going to build better careers. And we're going to connect a lot of dots along the way.

I'm so glad you're here. Let's build something.
